The collecting world was abuzz as news filtered out about an Edwardian
enamel advertising sign promoting BP The Winning Petrol which sold for
a world auction record of 28,000 pounds (not a printing error) with
the auctioneers 10% buyers premium and VAT. Who said nostalgia isn't
what it used to be? Actually, the record price for any advertising sign is currently US$85,000.00 - paid in 1990 for a Campbell's soup painted sign on tin by the Standard Advertising Company Ohio, with the soup cans making up the stars and stripes of the American flag - It is only a matter of time before these records are broken again.
In Australia, recent record sales include a BP Winner Sign A$36,000.00, a Burgoynes Kangaroo Brand Australian Burgundy Sign A$14,000.00 and a Coopers Stand Alone LOIN Sign A$10,000.00. In the last three months we have been offered several signs at serious money including an English Dunlop Tyre Sign 11,500 pounds, and a British Dominions Empire Motor Policy Free Towing Sign for A$23,000.00
